Everyone has a different way of seeing the world. Whether you choose to see the world in black and white or vibrant colors, it is your own view. One of the most powerful ways of viewing the world is through photography. Photography allows people to show others their perspective of the world. With each photograph you are documenting a piece of your life. With the click of a button, you capture a moment that lasts forever.
Young photographer Jordan Knight creates her own method of art through photography. She displays her love of travel and adventure through nature, landscape and wedding photography. With each photograph, she gives her audience a still moment filled with raw emotion.
Knight started photography at a young age when she purchased her first camera in the ninth grade. She began taking photographs of nature every day. In the 11th grade, Knight started taking cheap family portraits to gain exposure and build a portfolio.
Photography is a competitive and risky career, and Knight was made aware of the risk early in her photography career.
“Sometime within my career of doing family portraits and senior photos, I decided to sell my camera because I was told how competitive it is and how hard it would be to have a career in this business,” Knight said. “I listened to them, [which was] very silly of me.”
Without a camera at the time, Knight credits her interest in photography returning when she traveled to Australia for the first time. She bought back the camera she previously sold and began taking pictures again.
“I fell deeply in love with this art again and found ways to make money on the side,” Knight said. “Once I started using my art [to photograph] weddings, I could see there was a demand and money in what I wanted to do.”
Knight’s photography website displays her work in wedding photography. With a unique aesthetic for each wedding, Knight captures the intimate moments to accompany the posed photographs of the wedding party.
“I never thought I’d love doing wedding photography,” Knight said. “There’s something about catching those precious moments that are so genuine. I think that’s where my style evolved from.”
Knight’s website also displays her photographs from adventures around the world. Her images range from places such as Puerto Rico, New South Wales, the Virgin Islands, Nicaragua and the United States. Her travel photography features a variety of landscapes, native animals and candid images.
“Honestly, there isn’t a type of photography I don’t like,” Knight said. “I started out loving landscape and animal photography, and that is still a huge dream of mine to pursue.”
According to Knight’s website, she is originally from Atlanta but currently lives in Wollongong, Australia. Her website states that she is “ready and willing to travel” to wherever her photography takes her.
To accommodate for her photography needs, Knight made several lifestyle changes. Knight was living comfortably in Australia when she decided she was longing for more travel in her life.
“I basically put all my belongings in a suitcase and a few boxes and put it in storage,” Knight said. “I normally stay with family and friends when I’m not touring or traveling. Having a prepaid sim card for my phone in each country is now a thing. I live a lot more simply and try not to accumulate too many things on the road.”
Currently, Knight is working as a touring music photographer. Knight’s website features music photography from Reading & Leeds, Vans Warped Tour and the End the Madness Tour. She most recently worked for Australian band Tonight Alive as they toured the United States with Sleeping With Sirens.
When Knight first started making connections with Tonight Alive, she was not interested in doing music photography at the time.
“Over the last three years, I’ve brought my camera along to any event or show with [Tonight Alive] and built up enough of a portfolio so they could show their label and management. The guys in Tonight Alive liked my style and wanted to use me ever since.”
Knight’s background in lifestyle photography shines through in her music photography. Her music photography includes an array of images. With behind-the-scenes, promotional and live action shots, Knight delivers a complete package to her audience.
Knight’s live performance shots capture the true emotion artists put into their music. To accompany the powerful live performance photographs, she takes intimate behind-the-scenes shots as the members trust her to accurately document their life on the road.
Touring photographers' work schedules are centered around the needs of the employing band. Knight’s time on the road mixes a balance of relaxation and work.
In the mornings, Knight finds time to relax on the bus, work out and explore the area around the venue.
“Normally, after I eat, I either work out or I like to explore what’s around and see if there’s a nice place for a photo opportunity,” Knight said. “If so, I gather the band during a time that suits everyone, and we get a few lifestyle shots.”
As the show approaches, Knight gathers her gear to prepare for the next round of photographs. First, she heads into the venue to shoot behind-the-scenes and lifestyle shots. Then, during the show, she ventures around the venue getting a collection of different live shots.
“The show is the time I forget everything that’s going on, and I’m running around having a great time looking for shots from all around the venue,” Knight said.
After the show, Knight spends a few hours editing all of the photographs from the day and uploading them to Dropbox for the band to save and post.
Knight is one of the emerging female photographers in the music industry. The music industry is a predominately male-driven industry. With many women becoming successful in the music industry, more women are striving to make their mark in the music industry.
Knight’s advice to women looking to work in the music industry is to “work hard and never feel intimidated by anyone.”
“If I’ve learnt anything so far, it’s that communication is key,” Knight said. “If you’re ever uneasy about anything, just ask. Never feel inferior to anyone else, but kindness gets you very far in this business.”
One day, Knight hopes her photography will take her to Africa.
“My biggest goal is to be in Africa for some time photographing endangered species and showing the world how beautiful they are and the changes we need to make to bring them back to life,” Knight said.
Whether on tour or traveling the globe, it's safe to say Knight will continue to capture photographs that show how she views the world's beauty through her camera.
